Comparing Own and Others’ Parent-Child Sex Talk Experiences:
The following activity encourages students to reflect upon their own family’s sex communication, and how it relates to others and to depictions in the media. Watch the short clip from the episode “I Think We Should Have Sex” (Season 1, Episode 17) of the television series Friday Night Lights, which highlights a conversation between a mother and adolescent daughter about sex.
Use your best practices for posting and responding in a discussion forum. Apply concepts from the text (specifically the section on Parent-child communication about sexuality from chapter 6) to attempt to determine the “best” practices of sex communication. Identify and evaluate the approach used by Tammi and Julie in the clip. Is there a best way to communicate about this taboo topic? How does religion, culture, and family culture play a role in these conversations?
